Biscuits and Gravy

Nothing satisfies my hubby more on a cold morning than a hot biscuit covered with a peppery sausage gravy! As a kid, my grandma would make this recipe for us every time she visited and I was always amazed that something so good could come out of just a few ingredients in such a short amount of time. Now I like to make this for my family around the holidays, when the weather outside is cold and we roll out of bed craving something hot and tasty!

Biscuits and Gravy
Serves 6

16 ounces of ground sausage (I used Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage)
6 slices bacon, diced
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter
4 cups milk
8 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon onion powder
freshly ground pepper

about 12 freshly baked biscuits (I often use Bisquick to make a quick batch, or even the pre-made Pillsbury ones from a can)

1. brown the ground turkey sausage and set aside, then brown diced bacon and set aside
2. melt butter in a medium saucepan
3. add flour and onion powder to melted butter, stirring until bubbly and slightly dry looking
4. add milk and whisk to get rid of any lumps, boil for 1 minute
5. bring to a boil and allow to boil for one minute, stirring continuously
6. lower heat to a simmer and add sausage and bacon, simmer for a few more minutes until thickened
7. season to taste with freshly ground black pepper, pour over hot, freshly made biscuits and enjoy immediately!
