Double Chocolate Orange Cookies

I am pretty sure that chocolate and orange are soul mates. I don't know about you, but tart yet sweet orange, when paired with rich, slightly bitter chocolate, creates a flavor combination that is impossible for me to resist! This recipe is one of the few that I've come up with that not only came out perfectly the first time I attempted it, but tastes even better than I dreamed it would! Imagine your favorite, gooey chocolate chip cookie, packed with melty chocolate chips, made even richer by adding cocoa powder to the batter, and then throwing in a bunch of fresh, bright tasting orange zest to the mix to liven it up. Sounds good, right?! Believe me... it tastes even better! Do yourself, and everyone you know, a favor... make these immediately! After the first bite, you too will know what true love tastes like!

Double Chocolate Orange Cookies
Makes about 35

1 cup butter, at room temperature
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon freshly grated orange zest
3 cups plus 2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and cover baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a mixer, cream butter and sugars together until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in vanilla, orange zest, and eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl in between each one.
4. Add in flour, cocoa, and baking soda and mix until just combined, then gently fold in chocolate chips.
5. Using a cookie scoop, place walnut sized balls of dough onto prepared cookie sheets, 2 inches apart, and bake for 12-14 minutes, until dry on top.
6. Allow to cool on sheets for a few minutes after coming out of the oven to firm up slightly, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
7. Enjoy warm or store in an airtight container for as long as they happen to last in your house!
